Any minute now, President Trump is expected to sign an executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education (DOE).
The President does not have the power to unilaterally eliminate federal agencies - only Congress has that authority.
But with Congress under Republican control, we need to make sure our elected representatives understand the devastating consequences of dismantling the DOE, and ensure they do everything in their power to prevent it. Only Congress has the authority to eliminate or defund federal agencies, and it's critical that they stand up for the students who need these programs now more than ever.
The DOE is central to enforcing civil rights protections of students and ensuring that students with disabilities, students with IEPs, children in early education programs, and children living in poverty have access to a quality education and all the resources they need. It protects students from discrimination, ensures schools comply with civil rights laws, expands access to affordable higher education, and safeguards the rights of students and families.
Without the DOE, these protections and supports would disappear, leaving millions of students, families, and educators with fewer resources, where historically disinvested communities are already fighting to access basic educational rights.
Take action now by sending a message to Congress, urging them to protect the DOE and defend the students who rely on it.
Thank you for standing up for the future of our students - and for all of us.
In solidarity,
