HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Greenwich sinks Stillwater in Section 2 Class C championship; Warriors unable to capture back-to-back sectional titles

In a rematch of the 2025 Section 2 Class C championship game, the Stillwater girls' basketball team was unable to defeat Greenwich for the second straight time, as the No. 2-seeded Warriors fell to the tournament's top-seeded Witches 45-38 on Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. "We're two very even teams," Stillwater head coach Cassidy Chapko said. "If we play 10 times, they might win five. We win five. It's just one of those nights that it could be a coin flip on who was going to win." Early on in the game, Stillwater had a 7-4 edge over the […]

Dr. Randy Cale's Terrific Parenting: Leadership as a parent

I think it's fair to say that many of us have had experiences working with others where leadership skills were lacking. Perhaps you've had a manager, coach, or friend handle you like you were a 'subject' to be told what to do. Or perhaps worse yet, you had a parent who incessantly tried to control everything you did, reminding you of everything you should or should not be doing. I'm curious: how did those experiences make you feel? Now, consider what your children hear from you each day. Are you trying to control them with your words? If so, such […]

Students in the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center Pet Tech program are fostering a yellow-bellied slider turtle while it awaits a permanent home. Native to the southeastern United States, the turtle was found in a pond in the Albany area and needed a permanent home, Pet Tech Teacher Helen Thompson said. Students named the turtle Fiona to match the other turtle currently in their care – Shrek. You gotta believe: Saratoga Central Catholic girls' basketball wins epic "dog fight" versus Northville to capture first-ever sectional crown

TROY, N.Y. — At some point in the fourth quarter of the Section 2 Class D championship game Saturday night at Hudson Valley Community College, Saratoga Catholic Central girls' varsity basketball head coach Athena DiLorenzo-Ryan took her dark purple sweatshirt off. How could she not? The final minutes of the fourth quarter were about as nail-biting and back-and-forth as a game could get. "The nerves, the sweat, the intensity, yeah, I definitely had to take that off," DiLorenzo-Ryan said. "We (had) girls crying on the bench. The game's not even over yet. It's just the emotions all over the place." […]

Questions and answers from the 'Car Doctor'

Q. Some newer cars (Mercedes as an example) do not have an oil dipstick. This complicates a DIY oil change. Is this stupid engineering or an attempt to save money on production costs? A. We are seeing more automakers doing away with conventional dipsticks. Some of this is financial. Even something as small as a dipstick and tube adds to the cost of the vehicle. Removing the dipstick when an electronic sensor is already on the engine simplifies production costs and eliminates two or more parts from the engine. Also when working correctly it keeps owners from adding too much […]

Siobhan Connally's Ittybits & Pieces: Happy traveler

I woke up as if by premonition. Four A.M. The room was dark and soundless except for the steady blinking clockface of an unset video player and the buzz-saw of my husband's snoring. Because I was awake, I checked my phone for changes since the last time I let myself distractedly doom scroll … sometime before turning in for the night and actually falling asleep. Of course, there was news and emails I could ignore, but there was also a text message from my daughter who was traveling for spring break. At first, I was a little nervous. Not about […]
