Dear Ashley,

Are you still interested in the online EdD program? Let me tell you more about the differences and similarities between an EdD and PhD program:

What positions are EdD and PhD degrees tailored to?

  • An EdD develops scholarly practitioners who strive to connect academia with real-world situations to solve complex problems.
  • A PhD develops lecturers, adjunct professors, and researchers, among others, for a tenure track at a university.

What is the goal of the research for each degree?

  • Research for an EdD program is for understanding local impact using applied, in-the-field action.
  • Research for a PhD program is for the development of a theory as it pertains to a focused area of study and the obtainment of general knowledge.

How do the curriculums differ?

  • An EdD program curriculum contains the courses necessary for general education (core classes).
  • A PhD program curriculum usually has optional concentrations that a student can take (elective classes).

How challenging is each program?

  • Both the EdD and PhD programs are thorough and time intensive.
