We'll be honoring members of the community who have dedicated their careers working to ensuring that every student receives a quality education. Among our distinguished honorees is Senator Shelley Mayer, a passionate advocate for children, public education, and working families across New York State.
Before her election to the State Senate in 2018, Senator Mayer served in the State Assembly for six years, where she chaired the Assembly Education Subcommittee on Students with Special Needs. This foundational work laid the groundwork for her current advocacy, which has secured millions in funding for schools serving our state's most vulnerable populations, including special education programs and low-income communities. As current Chair of the Senate Education Committee, she has been instrumental in passing legislation decoupling a reliance on state standardized tests in teacher evaluations, and ensuring the phase-in of Foundation Aid, achieving full funding for the first time in September 2023 - a landmark moment for public education in New York.
With extensive experience in civil rights and community advocacy, Senator Mayer is deeply committed to educational equity. She has tirelessly worked to enhance resources for students with special needs, advocating for increased funding for Special Act schools and programs tailored to the unique needs of their students. Additionally, she has pushed for expanded access to pre-K programming, particularly in underserved areas outside New York City. By seeking to address systemic inequities and promote more inclusive policies, Senator Mayer is building a legacy that empowers families and transforms the educational landscape for all children across New York State.
