Our schools have been struggling to meet the growing demands due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With no additional funding in 2020 many districts were forced to make cuts and layed off hundreds of educators. Now, as Governor Cuomo and the state legislature prepare for the 2021 state budget, we must demand that they prioritize our children and their education. Join us tomorrow to Protect Students, Not Billionaires. The first week of the year began with both widespread joy and despair. As we began to celebrate the outcome of Georgia Senate races, we were quickly confronted with the white supremacy reigning down on our nation's capitol in an attempt to undermine democracy and to enact terror across our country. Our nation, our state and our cities are at a point of reckoning. As our nation's capital works to address the act of terror and violence that took place last week, New Yorkers are turning their attention to our state's capital. New York State has been complicit for years in allowing capitalism, racism, and white supremacy to guide the legislation and budgets that are passed each year. Governor Cuomo has consistently attacked public education and Black and Brown communities by robbing our students of aid and by underfunding our schools. Join us on January 12, in person in NYC or virtually from anywhere across the state to fight for our public schools and the full funding they deserve. Governor Cuomo condemned the failed coup attempt as "the final chapter of an incompentent, cruel, and divisive administration." It is time for Governor Cuomo also end his years-long incompetent, cruel, and divisive attack on our public education and finally put the needs of our students above the desires of the ultra-rich. New York's students need the state to invest in public education — from child care to Pre-K to grade 12 — to ensure all students across the state, especially Black, Latinx, immigrant and low income children receive a high quality education. That means New York's leaders need to tax the ultra rich. We will be holding a speak out and teach-in on why we need to raise revenue for our schools with an increase in taxes on New York's ultra wealthy.
