Hi Ashley,
Over the weekend, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed the state budget. We're still going over details, but here are the biggest takeaways for the coming year:
- K-12 education: Year 2 of the phase-in of Foundation Aid for public schools is fully funded, along with language on accountability in how that money can be spent for both Foundation Aid and federal school funding
- Pre-K: $100 million for the expansion of universal pre-K
- Child care: The budget includes about a $1.8 billion increase in spending for expanding access to families and increasing workforce support.
- ...What's missing from the budget bills is any language regarding the $7 billion that Governor Hochul promised the state would be spending on child care over the next 4 years.
We'll have more details on these updates and much more for you next week. Join us on April 19 for a state budget debrief for child care, pre-K-12 education and higher education. We'll be joined by special guests Senator Robert Jackson and Senator Jabari Brisport to talk through the state budget and next steps for our advocacy together.
