Hello Ashley

We hope this message finds you well as we embrace the back-to-school season with open arms. We've got news that's bound to add an extra dose of excitement to this special time of year!

Today we released a new report, titled "Moving New York Toward Educational Equity" which outlines the journey that has resulted in fully funded Foundation Aid for twenty-five historically underfunded districts. For the very first time, high-need majority Black and Latinx school districts across our state are finally receiving the funding they've long been promised to provide students with a sound basic education. It's a historic achievement that we owe to the relentless efforts of students, families, and community organizers who've been steadfast champions of educational equity for decades.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • In September 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul's announcement of a $2.7 billion increase in school funding marked a vital step toward ensuring students receive the resources they rightfully need and deserve.

  • We're seeing tangible improvements in student outcomes, proving that equity isn't just a buzzword - it's a powerful force for change!

  • The report doesn't shy away from tough divergences of opportunity, delving into the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on high-need majority Black and Latinx communities, and highlighting the urgency to tackle racial and economic inequalities head on.

  • Full Foundation Aid funding is already making waves! Districts are using these newfound resources to reduce class sizes, invest in social-emotional learning, expand English language learner programs, and hire extra staff.

Commemorating This Moment

We're thrilled to announce a Celebration Tour across New York State to honor this milestone and pave the way for the important work that still lies ahead. While full Foundation Aid funding is a major turning point, it's just the starting line in a race to dismantle decades of education inequality.

Our Celebration Tour will bring together stakeholders, community leaders, parents, educators, and policymakers. We'll dive into constructive dialogue and collaborate on how to keep the momentum going. Our goal? To ensure that every single student has access to a top-notch education.

Stay tuned for more details about the Celebration Tour - you won't want to miss it! Until then, learn more about our NYC event on October 5.
