This blog is about everything. I will address various topics hopefully on a day by day basis. Topics will range from my personal experiences to information that I learned from watching various television shows. Who says television isn't educational.
Imagine this?! New York’s budget deal has been reached and the Governor agreed to tax the rich and fully fund what our communities have been asking for and need.
Wish we could say all of that’s true, alas, April Fools! As much as we’d love to be sending a different email today, the reality is that the budget is still being negotiated in Albany, and it is still falling short on what New Yorkers need.
Here’s what needs to be in the final deal. Child care funding must be no less than the Senate’s proposed investment in the workforce and the Assembly’s plan to strengthen CCAP so families can actually access care. Foundation Aid must be updated so funding reflects who students are and the real conditions schools are facing today, including support for English Language Learners, students experiencing homelessness, foster care, and the real cost of education across regions. Mayoral control must come out of the budget and go through a democratized public process that centers parents and communities and gives them a key role in shaping what comes next. All of this can be funded through the progressive revenue measures we have been calling for.
Take Action
Send a message to your elected representatives, urging them to tax the rich and invest in all of the public resources New Yorkers have been calling for.
All of this is already on the table. It just has to be agreed to by the people making the decisions right now: Governor Hochul, Speaker Carl Heastie, and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
