EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. — The Rensselaer County Legislature unanimously passed the county’s 2026 budget during a meeting earlier this week and will see an eighth consecutive property tax rate reduction, with the county tax rate set to be lowered by just over nine percent. All 19 legislators from both caucuses were present and approved a […]

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Saratoga Springs remains resilient, keeps CBA Syracuse "on the ropes" in Class AA state championship loss

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — At halftime of the 2025 Class AA Championship game at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse on Saturday, the Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks high school football team was down 21-0 to Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse). In the locker room, no heads were down. The urge to fight was still alive. All year, the Blue Streaks battled on the gridiron and bullied their way to a 7-2 regular season record. In November, Saratoga Springs clinched a berth to the Section 2 Class AA Super Bowl, where it upset the Christian Brothers Academy (Albany) to earn its first sectional […]

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Christian Brothers Academy solidifies spot in football lore with 3rd straight Class AA title

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Christian Brothers Academy football won a third straight Class AA state championship, 41-12, over Section II's Saratoga Springs on Saturday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. Saturday's victory marked CBA's fourth state title in five years, a feat accomplished only by Maine-Endwell (2011-14) and Tioga (2021-23, 25). Six other teams have won three straight New York state championships, though Mike Hart's 2001-2003 Onondaga squads are the only ones from Section III to do so. CBA is the first school in the 30-year history of the Class AA state tournament to win three straight. After both teams punted […]

Questions and answers from the 'Car Doctor'

Q. I have a 2006 Ford Escape and the transmission is shot. Is it worth spending $2500 to have a used transmission installed? The Escape has 135,000 original miles, has been well maintained and runs good. Recently my mechanic who suggested the transmission has replaced the wheel bearings, front struts, and brakes. We also had some bodywork done. It has been a good winter vehicle, and I live in an area that gets lots of snow. I am debating what to do, please advise. A. Right now the car has little value since you cannot drive it. Perhaps as little […]

Siobhan Connally's Ittybits & Pieces: Enjoyment of the holidays

"Are you all packed?" I wave my hands in the air: part acknowledgement of the question, part indignation about having been asked it. Of course, I'm not packed. Packing, as nature and history proscribe, means that I will be pacing around in the eight-square-foot space where my clothes and luggage reside until the wee hours of the morning, as he snores, navigating in the dark with only the flashlight on my phone and a faltering memory of where I last saw the shoe travel bag. As usual, when I have adequate time to prepare, I find myself shoving coconut flakes […]

READER'S VIEW: 'Casablanca' and New York's Affordability Crisis. Shocked?

New York has an affordability problem. We all know it. After being part of the problem for many years, it finally dawned on our Governor this year that people can't afford to live here. It's no wonder people are escaping New York in droves, leading the nation in out-migration. Our previous governor blamed the exodus on the weather. Remember the 1990s hit "Blame it on the Rain"? We may get our share of precipitation in New York, but when 16 percent of people fleeing our state head for the "warm and balmy" state of New Jersey, you can't credibly "blame […]
