HORSE RACING: Fionn with a giant performance to capture G1 Belmont Oaks Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — George Messina and Michael Lee's Fionn ran down post-time favorite Nitrogen under a well-timed ride from Flavien Prat to win Saturday's featured Grade 1, $500,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational, a nine-furlong Mellon turf test for sophomore fillies, on Day Three of the July 4th Racing Festival at Saratoga Race Course. "I didn't know we had it, until obviously they posted the numbers, but I felt like she hit the wire [first]," dual Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox said. "At the wire, it looked like she had her nose down." The daughter of Twirling Candy was the second […]

HORSE RACING: Think Big closes strong to capture G3 Kelso

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Godolphin's Kentucky homebred Think Big proved a stretch out in distance was well within his range, surging late to overtake 9/5 favorite Intellect and capture Saturday's Grade 3, $175,000 Kelso, a one-mile inner turf test for older horses on Day Three of the July 4th Racing Festival, at Saratoga Race Course. Trained by Michael Stidham, the 4-year-old Twirling Candy gelding had made his six previous starts at 5 1/2-furlongs, taking the Grade 2 Shakertown in April at Keeneland and the Grade 2 Turf Sprint in May at Churchill Downs. With his Kelso score, he avenged a […]

HORSE RACING: Obliteration dominates the G3 Sanford

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Leland Ackerley Racing's Obliteration was ultra-impressive when improving to 2-for-2 in Saturday's Grade 3, $175,000 Sanford, a six-furlong sprint for juveniles, during the July 4th Racing Festival at Saratoga Race Course. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the Violence bay graduated by a widening 7 1/2 lengths sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on June 12 at Churchill Downs, and he upped that margin to 10 1/2 lengths at the Spa in a final time of 1:10.65. "He's just a very special horse," said Scott Blasi, assistant to the first time Sanford-winning Asmussen. "He has a ton […]

DEC encourages motorists to give turtles 'A Brake'

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding state residents about the emergence of New York's turtle species with the warm weather months here. They are migrating to habitats for basking, foraging and nesting. Female turtles are seeking nesting areas to lay their eggs and may need to risk crossing roads to get to these habitats. Unfortunately, thousands of turtles are killed each year when struck by vehicles in New York State. Please never remove a turtle from the wild to rescue it or take it to an area with fewer roads. Turtles are familiar with the landscape […]

Siobhan Connally's Ittybits & Pieces: She feels so small when I hug her goodbye

She feels so small when I hug her goodbye. It surprises me because she usually fills whatever room she inhabits with an outsized personality. I forget that her physical form is quite petite. I'm not the hugging type, but with the kids, I embrace this hypocrisy. Usually holding on a few beats too long …for them … as we part. These days, we greet each other this way, too. "Enough, Mom! I'll be here all week." My daughter came home from college (she attends practically year-round) to watch her brother graduate from high school. And to razz him about his […]
